This year, TINC2024 presentations are on the latest industry STO performance trends across safety, cost, schedule, readiness, and discussions of the best practices that are being utilized to achieve top quartile outcomes. An additional presentation highlighting an AP-Networks’ client company’s “hands-on” experience during their journey to STO success is being planned. The intent of this presentation is to share challenges and implementation roadblocks faced on the journey to achieving consistent, competitive outcomes.
Pete Shirley is the Director, STOs for Asset Performance Networks, based out of the company’s office in Houston, Texas. Pete’s more than 30 years of experience include work in the refining, petrochemical, and associated service industries, as well as more than a decade serving onboard U.S. Navy submarines. This diverse background affords him a wide technical understanding of multiple disciplines from both owner and contractor perspectives. In his current role, Pete shares responsibility for the development and growth of the company’s presence in the United States.
Since joining AP-Networks, Pete has executed more than 40 assessments each year. These assessments have run the gamut of AP-Networks services, including Turnaround Assist Programs (T-AP), Integrated Turnaround Assist Programs (iT-AP), Experience Augmentations (EA), and Risk Based Scope Reviews (RBSR). In addition to executing RBSRs, Pete developed the software behind the RBSR process, as well as a software based tool for resource planning.
Nathan Centofanti is the Manager of Benchmarking and Data Services for AP-Networks, based out of the company’s office in Bethesda, Maryland. Nathan’s career spans more than 15 years conducting and leading benchmarking and analysis for the chemical and oil & gas industries. In his current role, Nathan is responsible for managing AP-Networks’ benchmarking services, along with developing and maintaining the various statistical tools used by the company.
Dr. Shawn Hansen is the Vice President of Research, Benchmarking, and Predictive Analytics for Asset Performance Networks, based out of the company’s office in Bethesda, Maryland. Drawing on his extensive consulting experience, Dr. Hansen has helped numerous organizations improve project management, implement risk management, and strengthen the performance of strategic projects & plant based project systems.
In his current role, Dr. Hansen developed the Value and Competitiveness Assessment of Plant-Based Project Systems (VCAP), an AP-Networks service that helps companies improve the business value of small projects. In addition to leading VCAP engagements, Dr. Hansen leads consulting engagements that improve project portfolio management practices and implement project performance measurement. He also leads stage-gate reviews for strategic projects, and benchmarking efforts for project management systems.
Dr. Hansen has completed empirically based cost, schedule, and performance risk analyses for more than 100 major capital projects. He has also executed Monte Carlo simulations of cost and schedule risk at critical stages throughout the lifecycles of client programs and projects. Through these analyses, Dr. Hansen has helped clients mitigate project delivery risks and optimize project delivery, enabling them to pursue high return projects.
Brett Schroeder a Co-founder and CEO of AP-Networks. Brett shares responsibility for the company’s overall strategic direction and management of its long-term growth and profitability. As Co-Founder, he has been instrumental in the development of the company’s values, ethics, and client-focused philosophy. Brett has more than 30 years of professional experience improving capital project and plant turnaround performance in the energy, petrochemical, and construction industries.
Mimi Eshetu is the Implementation Manager for Asset Performance Networks, based out of the company’s office in Bethesda, Maryland. She possesses more than 14 years of experience providing support on a variety of engineering, environmental, and economic assignments for both public and private sectors of the energy industry.
In her current role, Mimi is responsible for training clients to effectively utilize AP-Networks’ tool suite, including NaviTrack, Turnaround-Network, Upstream-Network, Pyxis, and the Project Pyramid. In addition to helping personnel master these tools, Mimi aids site leadership in effectively rolling the tools out. She also plays a role in work process customization, helping to develop and implement processes custom tailored to a client’s particular organization. In addition, she serves as the Lead Coordinator for AP-Networks’ annual TINC America conference
Sonia Kaestner is the Project Manager, AP-Networks Learning Systems and Director Latin America, based in Bethesda. Sonia has more than 20 years of international experience in project management consulting, marketing, data analytics & research, and training & development. With fluency in Spanish (native), English, German, and Italian, she has successfully deployed team-oriented strategies and solutions in high-level organizations across the globe. In her current role, Sonia shares responsibility for the development and growth of the company’s presence in the Latin America region.
Sonia has performed major benchmarking analyses of turnarounds and capital project events to help major energy and industrial companies reduce risks, implement best practices, and optimize their cost, schedule, and operability targets. By helping clients revise targets, achieve scope alignment, and structure multicultural team building meetings, Sonia has honed her ability to take client organizations to new levels of sophistication and success. In addition to her role at AP-Networks, Sonia continues her role as an Operations and Information Management adjunct professor and research associate at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.

John Camp is the Managing Director of Asset Performance Networks United States office based out of Houston, Texas. John joined AP-Networks in 2014 after serving as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy.
In his role with AP-Networks, John is responsible for managing and leading the associates of the United States region through a series of diverse engagements geared towards making clients shutdowns, turnarounds, outages, and projects more predictable, competitive, repeatable, and sustainable. John grows the United States client base by ensuring that AP-Networks content and knowledge, data analytics and benchmarking, and software as a service solutions are providing value to the expanding roster of clients – both at the shop level as well as at the executive level.
John has been instrumental in his time at AP-Networks in the development and deployment of work processes. John has developed approximately 15 work processes including processes for small portfolio based storage tank outages, offshore turnarounds, and large scale full refinery Mega Complexity turnarounds.
Beginning in the Spring of 2020 John spent three years in the company’s Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) office based out of Amsterdam. In this capacity, John was able to leverage his ability working with diverse clientele across multiple continents, managing relationships for Industry supermajors as well as smaller, more specialized clients. John was also responsible in Amsterdam for ensuring that content and services were standardized and of consistent quality between EMEA and North America.
As a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy John served as the Electrical Officer onboard USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66) where he led a division of sailors in the maintenance, operation, and repair of the ship’s 60 HZ electrical distribution system including a complex shipyard maintenance overhaul. John’s second tour was as Navigator onboard USS ANZIO (CG 68) where he was responsible for the safe navigation of the ship.
John has deployed three times and is a qualified Gas Turbine Engineering Officer of the Watch.
Carl Souchereau is the Managing Director of Asset Performance Canada, based out of the company’s office in Calgary, Alberta. Carl possesses more than 25 years of leadership experience in business process improvement, mega capital project execution, and turnaround planning in the power industry. In his current role, Carl shares responsibility for the company’s overall strategic direction and the management of its long-term growth.
Prior to joining AP-Canada, Carl held several senior roles within the Alberta power industry, where he led the development and execution of large greenfield capital projects. These included high voltage DC transmission lines, combined cycle power generation, and centralized district energy systems. Additionally, Carl led the planning for large power plant turnarounds for combined cycle, co-generation, and hydro-electric technologies. Before working in the utilities industry, Carl served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. He held numerous leadership roles in surface ships, deploying for missions in the Persian Gulf in 2002 and NATO in 1990 and 1992.
Carl holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Royal Roads University and a Project Management Professional (PMP)® designation from the Project Management Institute.
George DeBakey is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of AP-Networks. He shares responsibility for the company’s overall strategic direction and management of its long-term preeminence and growth. During AP-Networks’ inception, George focused the company on the important and strategic idea that best practices may be known and measured, but unless implemented, they remain academic and theoretical. Since then, he has led an organization responsible for changing the way Fortune Global 500 energy and chemical companies approach turnarounds, shutdowns, outages, and capital projects.
TJ Felts is a Senior Consultant with AP-Networks, based out of the company’s office in Houston, Texas. TJ also serves as the Practice Area Leader in charge of VCAP, the Value and Competitiveness Assessment of Plant-Based Projects. In this role, he works with site leaders, helping them take a holistic approach to their portfolio of plant-based projects in pursuit of strategic project selection and competitive project outcomes. TJ joined AP-Networks after serving in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) where he held several leadership roles in construction management and management projects. TJ holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology, Engineering Geology Option from Texas A&M University.
Brian Riggs is an Analyst with the AP-Networks Benchmarking and Data Services group, based out of the company’s office in Bethesda, MD. Brian serves as the Research Project Leader for the group, leveraging a background in project management, system engineering, and analytics. In his current role, he works to develop and maintain AP-Networks’ tools and statistical models and plays a pivotal role in guiding the company’s ongoing research initiatives. Prior to joining AP-Networks, Brian was engaged as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Engineering and Engineering Physics at Tulane University. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics and Engineering Physics from Tulane University, as well as a Master of Engineering in Material Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Mike O’Kane is the Vice President of Products and Services for AP-Networks, based out of the company’s office in Houston, Texas. Mike shares responsibility for the development and ongoing improvement of the company’s products and services. In his previous role as Managing Director of AP-Canada, Mike shared responsibility for the company’s overall strategic direction and the management of its long-term growth. Under his leadership, AP-Canada experienced consistent year-over-year growth, expanding both its list of clients and its roster of experienced consulting staff.
Craig Small is a Senior Consultant with AP-Networks, based out of the company’s office in Houston, Texas. Craig also serves as the Practice Area Expert, Turnaround Management for the company. He leverages a background of more than 20 years in turnarounds, maintenance, and reliability to provide expert guidance to both upstream and downstream companies. Craig has worked in a diverse array of industries that includes chemicals, plastics, acetates, pharmaceuticals, emulsions, fibers, coatings, and utilities. His wide range of experience allows him to approach challenges from the perspective of an owner as well as a contractor. Craig holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Cynthia Lopez is the Manager of Intellectual Property Solutions, part of the Technology and Software Engineering division of AP-Networks, and is based out of the company’s Houston office. Cynthia possesses 20 years of professional experience in software development. As a part of AP-Networks, she has led the development and ongoing support of several leading tools for AP-Networks, including the Turnaround Network, Upstream Network, Capital Project Network, and NaviTrack. Cynthia has implemented multiple customized turnaround work processes for AP-Networks’ largest clients. In addition, she developed a customized risk management application for one of the world’s most prominent energy companies. Cynthia holds a BBA in Information Systems from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and an MBA from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
John Alkemade is the Managing Director – EMEA for AP-Networks, based out of the company’s office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He possesses more than 25 years of project and turnaround management experience spanning the energy, oil and gas, and chemical industries. In his current role, John shares responsibility for the development and growth of the company’s presence in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. John holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Amsterdam.
Chet Unruh is a Subject Matter Expert with AP-Networks, specializing in risk based scope review and turnaround assessment. Chet is a recognized industry expert who brings more than 40 years of experience in the petrochemical industry to his current role. He helped to develop AP-Networks’ advanced risk based methodology and proprietary tools, as well as the company’s corporate integrated turnaround management system. Prior to joining AP-Networks, Chet worked for Shell in various positions in maintenance, operations, and contracts. He was involved in more than 100 turnarounds of various complexities. He also served as Chairman of the Corporate Maintenance Management Council, a group tasked with improving maintenance competitiveness across the company’s worldwide refineries.
Chet holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University.
Pete Kwiatkowski is a Senior Consultant with Asset Performance Networks, based out of the company’s office in Houston, Texas. Pete joined the company after serving as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, where he gained extensive experience working in ship engineering plant operations, managing personnel and contractors, and coordinating large-scale plans. Since joining AP-Networks, Pete has worked with clients to strengthen their capital project and turnaround performance execution, focusing in particular on the integration between projects and turnarounds. Pete holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Technology from Cornell University.
